ABOUT THE CARIBBEAN
The Caribbean, also referred to as the West Indies (obsolete) or Antilles, are a large group of islands in the Caribbean Sea. They are situated in front of Central America, between the US territory, NE coast of South America and Atlantic Ocean.
The group consists of numerous small and some larger islands.
Some of them are independent and some are constituent parts of other countries. They are usually divided into two groups – Greater and Lesser Antilles.
Some include the Bahamas and Turk and Caicos Islands in the Caribbean although they are, technically speaking, in the Atlantic Ocean.
The Greater Antilles include the larger islands – Cuba, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico and Jamaica. The Lesser Antilles consist of smaller islands that stretch from the Virgin Islands in the north to the coast of Venezuela in the south; the northern islands are known as the Leewards and the southern are Windwards.
