Entertainment

Music and dance have always been an important part of the Caribbean culturesMusic and dance have always been an important part of the Caribbean cultures. Each island has s tradition, believes and rituals of its own, but they share hot-blood and passion. Today there are many different festivities where the locals celebrate their past, religion or significant individuals. One of the best known traditional festivals is the Carnival that takes place on most of the islands, when elaborate costumes are worn, and everything is wrapped up in music and vivid colours. Another widely celebrated festivity is the Jonkonnu, a festival that celebrates a 17th century slaves’ hero John Canoe; it is especially popular in Jamaica and the Bahamas. Each island has its own celebrations and there is practically a festival for every occasion and numerous patron saints; cherishing national heritage and history are important elements of these festivities.

Finally, when the sun sets and if you have any energy left, remember that the Caribbean is well-known for entertainment and night life. Anchor your yacht and go out, eat at one of many restaurants, sip cocktails in bars and dance to lively Caribbean music (meringue, reggae, salsa, rumba, calypso); every day you can enjoy the music and feel the rhythm in the streets, but don’t miss out on official fiestas and festivals such as Fiesta del Fuego in Santiago de Cuba (7-day street party in July), or Jazz Festival and International Film Festival in Dominican Republic.

Try your luck in one of the casinos. While gambling is extremely popular on some of the islands, on others you won’t find a single casino. The hotspots for those looking to catch some luck are Antigua, Aruba, the Bahamas, Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic (has the highest concentration of casinos in the Caribbean).
